Take Me Out to the Ballgame

UPDATED:  The students had a blast at the game! We had quite the adventure getting off campus (hard lockdown, bus with no wheelchair access)but eventually made it to the stadium. The students, all 30 of them were very patient through it all.  I hadn't realized before we left that the students didn't know we were going to a minor league game.  We had talked about it and sent notes home but when Monday came..they had forgotten and so did some of the parents ( but that's another story).  Many thought we were just going out back to the school's field to watch a game there, kind of funny. Anyways, the students were amazed by the stadium more than half on them have never been to a game, so it was a great teaching moment in so many ways! I couldn't even tell you who won the game there were so many kids from other schools and so much going on that I barely had a chance to watch the game, but I do remember the awesome smiles of our kids.

Tomorrow will be our first outing with 3 of our self-contained classes, roughly about 30 high school students.  One of our teachers will be out, so I'm a little nervous about taking all the kids without her but thankfully I have some wonderful assistants that know the kids very well.  We are planning on taking a tour of the baseball stadium, so we can see all the various jobs that are needed to keep the stadium running. But really the best part is that we get to stay for a day game! I can't wait to see what students get excited about watching a baseball game, who is more interested in the food, and those that will just chat and be silly the whole time. Community outings are so telling of what students really like.

  2. Nellie,

I feel so blessed just visiting your blog. I am so happy there are teachers like you. I often feel very frustrated that my district believes so strongly in the CCRS that say EVERY child should be prepared and ready to attend college. I think they are forgetting that God did not create some minds that way and we need people who learn trades and other skills that are the glue that holds a community together.

I am happy to be your newest follower and would love for you to visit me when you get the chance. I just shared a poem called "Everyday Heroes" that I would love for you to read. =)

    1. Thanks Heather! I'm very blessed to have an administration that was willing to hear my colleagues and I out about what was really important for our students. It wasn't easy to say the least. Seeing those kids smile and hearing that some of them have never been to a game before was worth all the stress! I will definitely check out your poem and have all started following you.
